This issue features two remarkable women photographers, both of whom have graced the pages of SxSE on a number of occasions. Their work is familiar to us all and this year they both have monumental new projects to share. SxSE is proud to show just the two of them in our Features section this issue.
Each issue we ask the curator of the recent SxSE gallery show to choose a few of the very talented photographers on the walls for the magazine. A couple of times a year it’s my turn! From the recent exhibition, Black + White I have chosen four photographers. I hope you enjoy their work as much as I do.
South x Southeast saw the culmination of a two year project between Arek Entera Safaris and SxSE Workshops this winter when we took a group of photographers to three different camps in the Masai Mara Reserve of Kenya. Arek Entera, lead by Cyndy Waters, provides a vast and deep knowledge of the country, its people, the safaris, the guides, the camps, and where to find the animals. Please read Cyndy’s statement below for more information.
In September we’re going back! And including a stop on the World Heritage Site of the island of Lamu in the Indian Ocean before heading inland for 2 camps and 10 days of safaris. For more info go here.
But, In the meantime, please enjoy the galleries of images and stories about their experiences below.
Noted photographer Peter Essick has lead the South x Southeast Workshop to the Okefenokee Swamp, Cumberland Island, St. Marys, Georgia, and (this year!) Folkston, Georgia for the last 6 years. The two ecological areas are as diverse as you could possibly imagine, each with its own mystery and magic. And the little towns of St. Marys and Folkston, GA are just as diverse in their own ways.
We returned this spring with a great group of students. And I asked them to please share with you some of their thoughts and images. Enjoy!
