The work centers on the paradox of emotions which occupy our fragile inner and physical exterior. The work too is loosely based on the book, “Les Parisiennes”, women who faced choices each day on survival during WWII, Paris.
The women contained herein offer themselves and their introspection. Their femininity is defined as inner strength, movement, serenity, and their ability to tread the threshold between the present and otherworldliness.
The work is profoundly poetic characterized by meticulous composition and associations to create a collage using elements of light, solarization, and every aspect of shadow imaginable. Through her lens, she invites the viewer to explore the melancholic, the dreams, the invisible, the desire – the photographs take on an almost meditation quality.
The photographs are presented as art objects. They are carefully printed as an archival pigment print on acid-free 80 gsm handmade Japanese Kozo paper, made from the mulberry tree – superior inks are used with a permanence of 100 years.
A self-taught digital photographer based in New Orleans, LA, leslie Tabony, is an artist using her own associations as she creates narratives which focus on the sublime and the ethereal.
The relationship of longing, sensuality and spirituality are often explored in her love of the portraiture of women.
Her work uses unusual light, diffusion, soft focus, a pictorial aesthetic and compositions to find the beauty in paring a visceral emotion amidst paradoxical extremes.
Infinitude, vulnerability, submission, reverence, sexuality, stillness, and quietude are weaved together – so too are poetry, philosophy, eras of times gone by – 18th, 19th and early 20th century.
Her work is mostly black and white, but sepia, duotones and even colour are used depending on the Body of Work.
