When I was 14 years old, I found my father’s old 35mm camera, and with his help, I built my first darkroom in our basement. I started shooting photos, drawn to the action of 1960’s New York City.  And for the rest of my life, I would have a camera by my side.

During my high school years on Long Island, I was on the yearbook photo staff. I went on to study at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan, making a commitment to become a professional photographer.

In 1980, I began working as a photojournalist in New York City. I have worked at The New York Law Journal and The New York Post, as well as many other publications in and around New York City and Long Island, and continue to take freelance assignments.

My recently self-published book, Made in NY, consists of photographs made from the 1960’s-80’s in New York City and Long Island with Pentax Spotmatic and Nikon cameras. -Rick Kopstein
